Well training was pretty damn minimal this week. Did some Work with Chad Aichs and Jesse Anderson then Traveled to Texas and trained at MetroFlex Fort Worth while presenting at CSCCa Seminar. In my training plan you can see how the core lifts are being managed via velocity measurements. These velocity measurements are built off of my individual profiling sessions of these lifts. Then using a reps in reserve to manage my accessory work as well as tracking of the perceived workout difficulty which are all visible in the training log.Here is my training log from this las week. After eleven years as a competitive powerlifter (24 World and 25 American titles) my shoulder joints have been reduced to bone on bone. Osteoarthritis is defined as the wearing away of the cartilage which cushions the joint. Most people over 60 years of age with this condition are subjected to shoulder replacement surgery which is an invasive procedure involving the removal of the head of the humerus and the installation of a titanium rod with a titanium ball on top into the bone marrow of the humerus itself. I was told a number of years ago by my orthopedic surgeon that I would not be able to lift heavy ever again if I undertook such an operation. Therefore, I continued to train with severe pain rather than end my career. My training partner, John Hare, has literally had to shove me under the bar for the last four years in order to get into position to squat-a very painful movement. I continued to ask my surgeon if any new techniques had been developed for the shoulder like the resurfacing procedures being performed on hips and knees. Finally, last year he referred me to Dr. Anthony Miniaci at the Cleveland Clinic who has been successfully resurfacing shoulders with a partial replacement technique known as Hemicap surgery. In this less invasive procedure the head of the humerus will be smoothed down to accept an “igloo”-like titanium dome which is merely glued and screwed to the surface. On the glenoid process of the scapula he inlays Teflon to form the other side of the joint. After meeting with Dr. Miniaci in March, I was convinced that after rehab I would be able to continue to compete at a high level. The following video details the number or processes involved in making the ShouldeRök™. Pictures don’t do the product full justice, as any ShouldeRök™ customer will tell you. Once in your hands you will see the true craftsmanship and how it’s built to last a lifetime.In this video you will see the ShouldeRök™ nut being cut out of raw plate on a CNC laser cutting machine. It is later put through the lathe to have the thread cut on the inside diameter and then tumbled to smooth the finish.The next step shown in the video is the turning of the main head which is cut out of solid 3” round stock before it becomes the finished component you see. In my personal shop you will see the perfect Diamond knurl being added to the handle. Then the forming of the flare on the end of the handle, which is the final touch before the assembly is welded together in the rotary welder.Unfortunately the plating shop didn’t allow me to get any shots of the ShouldeRök™ going into the dip tanks.In addition to the How-Its-Made video here are a couple recent ShouldeRök™ reviews. I had big goals going into the meet this last weekend. I was feeling really good for retaking the 220 squat record and making a run and bumping up the total record significantly. My weight was the lowest it had been in years going into the meet so I wasn’t worried about the weight cut and new I would be in better shape than I was used to.However I was also pumped about helping my partner at EPC pull off a 97 person meet in record time. I pride myself in well run meets and was also looking to step up the ‘stage presence’ for our lifters. The week was busy and stressful at work and I took all my deload days and then some working late at the gym prepping for the meet. Building a steel framed 16x14 platform, automating my monolift, setting up software to manage the timing.Thursday night I picked up Amit Sapir from the airport who had talked me into letting him do the meet despite not being fully prepped. I took Amit with me on Friday after weigh ins as I ran around town all day doing prep errands for the meet and listening to him say, “what are you doing! Your supposed to be relaxing!”.I ended up passing out on the carpet in my sons room that evening and then waking up later and staying up till past midnight finalizing the flights and meet, results sheet, and meet software. Then instead of sleeping in I was up early running to the meet to finalize a bunch of prep and help train the table help.
